Skateistan Afghanistan is the cover story in the August 2012 issue of Gulf Life Magazine by Gulf Air! The 8-page feature looks at our project in Kabul, interviewing staff and students and including amazing photographs taken between 2009-2012.
“It's a great place, especially for the kids who are working on the streets,” says class administrator Ariana Ikram, who has a degree in educational psychology. “It’s a safe zone for them to relax and learn something, and we are always encouraging them to play together, helping them learn how to mix.”
The project "Kabul at Work" is profiling dozens of people living and working in Kabul from all walks of life. Skateistan's longtime skate instructor Merza was one of the Afghans they featured. From working on the streets as a carwasher to becoming our head skate instructor and a middle manager, Merza has come a long way and made us very proud.
Skateistan is happy to finally announce the availability of Skateistan: The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan in North America. The book is available in limited quantities and can now be purchased online in the US through Amazon.com, with 100% of profits going towards Skateistan.

For the past year, Skateistan Kabul chose an employee of the month and recently held a draw for one of our staff to win two tickets to Mecca. Longtime skate instructor Noorzai, age 17, won and chose to send his parents. They went on the once-in-a-lifetime trip this summer. Congratulations to Noorzai for all his hard work with Skateistan!
